KINDER — A parish teen is in jail after an incident at an area high school that involved a gun on school property.

Residents here will soon have a new pavilion to provide a gathering space and protection from the elements in the center of Greenwood Cemetery.

Thanks to a strong geomagnetic storm caused by a powerful solar event, residents of Southwest Louisiana caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the sky.

Elton High School Ag Advisor Lana Myers and members of Elton FFA volunteered at a special reception honoring area veterans in attendance at The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., while on display at Coushatta in Kinder. EHS Principal Amy Gobert said, “It was a powerful and humbling experience for our students to serve those who have served our country. Thank you to all the veterans for your courage, sacrifice and dedication. We are forever grateful.”

Schools throughout Jeff Davis Parish held ceremonies this week to honor the brave men and women who fought for the freedom of the American people. At Hathaway High School, the solemn celebration was presented by the school’s Student Council, Library Club, high school speech class and Kindergartners. Additionally, Brett Travis was the special guest speaker, and the event was held in memory of the late Dwayne Guidry, who dedicated most of his life to the nation’s Armed Forces.
