Flocks and Fields

Crawfish ponds between Welsh and Roanoke draw a variety of wading birds to the exposed area, turning into a welcoming field for flocks of native feathered friends. Wood storks, roseate spoonbills, ibises, herons and egrets can be seen taking advantage of the shallow water and remaining food as the ponds are drained.

With the new school year just days away, Sheriff Kyle Miers is reminding drivers across Jeff Davis Parish to slow down, stay alert and pay attention as students return to the roads and classrooms. The Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office has released its “Stay Alert, Stay Alive in School Zones” reminder as part of its back-to-school safety efforts, emphasizing that schoolzone speed limits will be enforced as students return to school.

Warriors Cook-Off to serve up jambalaya, classic cars, support for local veterans

The aroma of simmering jambalaya, the shine of classic cars and the sounds of live music will once again come together for a cause as the Southwest Louisiana Ancillary Committee hosts its fifth annual Warriors Jambalaya Cook-Off and second annual Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 5, starting at 9 a.m. at the Jeff Davis Parish Fairgrounds.

Historic library sconces return home after decades

Two historic wall sconces that once welcomed visitors to Jennings’ original post office have returned to their rightful place after spending decades in storage. Thanks in part to a chain of friendships, careful stewardship and a shared appreciation for preserving local history, the sconces have helped restore another piece of Jefferson Davis Parish Library’s history.
