HATHAWAY — Zack Lopez is running for the Jeff Davis Parish School Board, citing his experience in leadership, financial management and community service. Lopez is a lifelong resident of Hathaway and graduated as valedictorian of Hathaway High School’s Class of 2009.

Karen Daniel Ancelet has announced her candidacy for District Judge, 31st Judicial District Court, Jeff Davis Parish. For Ancelet, the decision to run for district judge did not come lightly, but rather she feels called to serve the community that raised her and to give back to the citizens of Jeff Davis Parish.

Incumbent Judge Steve Gunnell is seeking reelection to the 31st Judicial District, having served as district judge in Jefferson Davis Parish for nearly 20 years. “During my tenure as your District Judge, I have worked hard to perform my duties with the utmost fairness and respect for everyone who has appeared in my court,” he said.

RV camping at the Jeff Davis Parish Fairgrounds will increase from $25 to $50 per night as the parish adjusts its rate to account for hotel/motel taxes that are now required to be remitted. The Police Jury approved the increase following a recommendation from its Fairgrounds Committee, with the new $50 nightly rate including the applicable hotel/motel tax rather than adding it separately to the advertised rental price.

LAKE ARTHUR — A much needed wastewater improvement project that stalled last month after failing to attract any bids is moving forward. The board of aldermen received three proposals at their recent council meeting for electrical upgrades on the town’s sewer lift stations.
