Parish residents may see a rate increase for trash services soon. The Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury recently heard from Waste Connections Bayou Incorporated about a proposed rate increase of $8 per customer for 2025 waste management services. Normal annual rate increases follow the consumer price index (CPI), averaging between 2–3% each year, covering annual rises in operational and material costs. The proposed fee increase is an additional $8 to the $20 initial service fee, for a one-time rate increase of 40%. Additional trashcan fees will stay the same at $5 per additional can. Waste Connections is in its third year of a sevenyear contract with JDP.

Cajun Family Chapter President Aaron Istre speaks to participants of the first annual Courir de Mardi Gras children’s chicken run about the history and tradition of the event. He said people would go door-to-door, dressed in disguise, singing old Cajun French songs and beg for ingredients to make a gumbo. Istre also taught the kids to say “cinq-sous” to beg for nickels in French. The children were split into groups and made multiple stops at neighboring homes where the owners would bring out one chicken or rooster to chase. Once the bird was set loose, kids chased it all over the owner’s yards until it was finally caught. The winners later received trophies and everyone enjoyed gumbo while listening to Cajun music.
