Summer meal program continues to grow, serving thousands of parish youth

By ERIN HARGRAVE news2@jenningsdailynews.net The Jeff Davis Parish School Board’s Child Nutrition Department is seeing tremendous success with its annual summer feeding program, helping ensure local children have access to nutritious meals while school is out. Through the program, registered families receive weekly food boxes filled with healthy meals and snack items for youth ages birth to 18.

Alabama women arrested on drugs, weapons charges

Two travelers found themselves behind bars this week after police seized narcotics, drug paraphernalia and weapons from their vehicle. On June 14, officers with the Jennings Police Department responded to a call at a local restaurant after a passenger in a vehicle asked employees to contact law enforcement.

Landfill expansion dirt sparks debate

The Jeff Davis Parish Landfill Commission spent much of its recent meeting debating a question that commissioners agreed extends beyond the value of dirt. At issue was a request by landfill operator Republic Services to excavate approximately 15 acres of soil from recently acquired landfill expansion property for daily cover operations.

School board to purchase two new buses

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board approved the purchase of two new buses to add to its fleet for the upcoming school year. The Transportation Committee was originally asked to consider purchasing two used 2021 or 2022 Blue Bird passenger buses.

Area student wins competition with innovative map

ELTON — An Elton High School student is once again earning statewide recognition for using technology to make a difference in her community. Ruby Johnson recently captured first place in Louisiana’s ArcGIS Online Competition for high school students with her project, “Sensory Stops of Louisiana.” The ArcGIS competition gives students an opportunity to research and map real-world issues using Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) software and present their findings through ArcGIS StoryMaps.

Parish library ocials discuss tax renewal failure

The Jeff Davis Parish Library Board of Control met this week to discuss parish library matters, including the future of the neighboring Carnegie Library following the failure of a tax renewal that funds the historic facility.
