Mercury advisory issued for Lake Arthur, Mermentau River

A new fish consumption advisory is urging residents to limit how often they eat several species of fish caught from Lake Arthur and the Mermentau River after recent testing detected elevated mercury levels. The Louisiana departments of Health, Environmental Quality and Wildlife and Fisheries issued the advisory recently following recent fish tissue sampling.

ELTON — Maroon and gold will soon fill the halls of Elton High School as students, alumni and community members come together to celebrate the school’s annual Homecoming festivities. EHS recently announced its 2026 Homecoming court, with four young ladies from each high school grade selected to represent their respective classes.

Man exposes himself to carhop

An area man was recently arrested after allegedly exposing himself to a Sonic employee while she was delivering his order. Mitchell Higginbotham, 39, of Lake Charles was arrested and booked into the parish jail on charges of obscenity and driving under suspension, according to the Jennings Police Department.

Fair Finishes

Local students, clubs and community organizations were busy putting their creativity to work as they prepared entries for the Jeff Davis Parish Fair booth competition. Participants spent hours building, decorating and adding finishing touches to colorful displays that will greet fairgoers throughout the annual parish fair.

LAHS highlights senior maids during Homecoming

LAKE ARTHUR — Lake Arthur High School is kicking off its Homecoming festivities this week. The final spotlight to the year’s LAHS Homecoming Court maids is on the five 2026 senior maids, including Fabbian Gail Boudreaux, Chloe Alysse Conner, Alivia Renee Hornsby, Kynlie Danae Newsom and Caitlin Marie Thibodeaux.

Art appreciation abounded Thursday when community members and artists gathered in downtown Jennings for an evening of good food, comradery and the arts. Zigler Art Museum held its annual Fine Wine and Dine fundraiser to help support its mission of enhancing cultural experiences in Jeff Davis Parish. Attendees enjoyed a lovely meal paired with various wines, spoken word from artist Melissa Bonin and a live auction.

Treasurer seeks review of $12.1M in school spending

Natural gas prices down as solar power generation jumps

(The Center Square) — The price of natural gas at the Henry Hub in Louisiana averaged $2.93 per million British thermal units from June through August, about 6% less than last year, even though the Lower 48 U.S. states recorded the hottest July on record and the demand for electricity soared.
Friday, Sept. 25 Chassity Dawn Breaux, 37, of Lake Arthur, was charged with domestic abuse battery, possession of marijuana/ THC/chemical derivatives first 14 grams or less, possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance, illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of manufacturing or distributing a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance.
