ELTON — An Elton High School student is once again earning statewide recognition for using technology to make a difference in her community. Ruby Johnson recently captured first place in Louisiana’s ArcGIS Online Competition for high school students with her project, “Sensory Stops of Louisiana.” The ArcGIS competition gives students an opportunity to research and map real-world issues using Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) software and present their findings through ArcGIS StoryMaps.

Common tomato pests at this time of year include tomato hornworms, leaf-footed bugs and stink bugs. The key to managing these pests is regular scouting and proper identification. The fourth annual flag retirement ceremony was recently held at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings. Volunteers, including James O. Hall Post 19 Commander Rebecca Doucet, James O. Hall Post 19 Chaplain Carl Benoit, Area B Commander for District 7 of the American Legion Michael Sanchez, Fr. Prabhakar Kowtiki from Our Lady of Seven Dolors, Knights of Columbus Council 2012 and 2855 members Frank Angelle, Tommy Dennis, Melward “Nookie” Doucet Jr. and Gene Salassi and Troop 64 Boy Scout Ryder Fontenot, gathered to reverently dispose of Old Glory. Burning the flags is the most dignified method of disposal mandated by the United States Flag Code.

A Jeff Davis Parish jury recently returned unanimous guilty verdicts against a Jennings man facing two felony charges. Tyson Tavon Mouton was found guilty of felony possession of cocaine and obstruction of justice in the 31st Judicial District Court.
