ELTON — How would you like to have a running back who is still learning the position, but has rushed for over 600 yards in just two games? That’s what the Elton Indians have in junior Makelin Lemoine. With Lemoine, the Indians are off to a 1-1 start for the season despite having new faces throughout their offensive and defensive lineups. “I believe in going with what brought you here,” commented Indian Head Coach Marcus LeJeune. “We are running the Power-I because it certainly showcases Lemoine’s abilities that go with our blocking schemes. Makelin is still learning how to play the position and he will only get better each week. We just need to find some more bodies who are willing to go out there and give us their best and allow us to platoon a little better instead of having so many go both ways in this heat. We are still a work in progress and have a long way to go,” LeJeune said.

WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds and the Jennings Bulldogs will face off in an in-parish battle here tonight. Welsh and Jennings both earned wins in week number two, with the Bulldogs topping Eunice by a 22-16 count while the Greyhounds outlasted Oakdale by a 36-28 score.

The Jennings Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season last Friday night in a tough battle with the Eunice Bobcats by a count of 22-16 at Jerry Simmons Stadium. The Dogs controlled the first half, building a 16-0 lead at one point, however they left a couple scoring opportunities out on the field that could have built a bigger lead and put the game further out of reach. The Bobcats responded by getting their Wing-T offense going and eventually tied the football game up in the beginning of the fourth quarter. But the Jennings defense came up big late in the game and forced a fumble that was scooped up by Humphrey Ned and run in for a game-winning 30-yard TD to make it a 22-16 final. Jennings Head Coach Bret Fuselier commented on the win over Eunice and said he was pleased in some facets of the game. “I was proud of the way the kids played and how hard they fought in what was a very physical ball game,” said Fuselier. “I thought we got off to a fast start offensively and did some really good things, but I thought we left quite a few opportunities out there that could have stretched our lead. I think the kids are figuring out how to win ball games and it was a total team effort Friday night. Our defense played very well and came up with some big stops when we really needed them to. I thought we did a good job winning the field position battle and that’s a testament to both sides of the football. We still have some things we need to clean up in order to play a complete football game, but we’re working on getting there.”

OAKDALE — It wasn’t easy at any point, but the Welsh Greyhounds had just enough fight in them to come away with a 36-28 win over the Oakdale Warriors in a non-district battle. It was a 41-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Ja’Kyrin Woodard that handed the visitors the final lead, but the Welsh defense finally got a crucial stop to ice the victory.

LAKE ARTHUR — The Lake Arthur Tigers remained perfect last Friday night when they took down the DeQuincy Tigers by a final score of 27-12 from Jack Doland Memorial Stadium. The win moves the Tigers to 2-0 on the young season, while DeQuincy fell to 0-2 on the year. The Tiger offense had another spectacular showing Friday night against DeQuincy as they rolled up 440 total yards of offense, while holding their guests to just 293. Junior running back Jaydon Prudhomme had another big night running the football as he toted the rock 22 times for 263 yards and one score. Sophomore back Tyler Campbell also rushed the pigskin 11 times for 40 stripes in the win. Senior quarterback Cameron Bonin also had a spectacular night throwing the pigskin as he completed 3-of-9 passes for 132 yards and a pair of TDs. Junior receiver Gabe Turner latched on to a pair of aerials good for 95 yards and a TD, while senior Breyon McZeal hauled in one pass for 37 yards and a score.

Junior back rushes for 334 yards, six TDs

The Jennings Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season last Friday night by squeezing out a nail-biter over the Eunice Bobcats 22-16 at Jerry Simmons Stadium. Jennings upped their record to 1-1 overall, while the Cats fell to an identical 1-1. The Dogs dominated most of the first half, including a pair of scoring drives on their opening possessions, but the Bobcats found a way to fight back and took control of the contest late in the second period and all through the third frame. The Dogs would ultimately score a late defensive TD with just under two minutes left in the game when senior safety Humphrey Ned recovered a fumble and raced 30 yards to the house to give the Dogs a 22-16 lead. The “Maroon Wall” stood tall in a last-ditch effort by the Bobcats and shut the door on the big rivalry win. With the victory, Jennings has now beaten the Bobcats three times in a row.

After a tough showing in their week one opener against the Iowa Yellow Jackets, the Jennings Bulldogs are eyeing a bounce-back game against long- standing rival Eunice. The Dogs dropped their first contest by a count of 35-6 to an elite Iowa team that shone on both sides of the football. Jennings’ defense played an outstanding first half, but wore out in the second half, and Iowa took advantage with three big scores. The Dogs had trouble moving the football in the contest with the Yellow Jackets, racking up only 122 total yards in the game. The Bulldogs ran the football for only 71 yards and quarterback Chris Ned threw for 51. Jennings Head Coach Bret Fuselier discussed the offense and said the Dogs have some things to clean up. “We have got to focus on ourselves and fix a lot of those things on the offensive side of the football,” said Fuselier. “We have a lot of guys up front that are young kids and are getting used to playing on Friday nights. But we can’t worry about who our opponent is this week; we just have to play better and get ourselves right.”
