The Jennings Recreation Department soccer teams, including Coach Jarod Noeske’s 9-10-year-old group, are well on their way, practicing several nights a week. Soon, the young soccer fanatics will be competing with other teams in their division.

The No. 9 Jennings Bulldogs have set their eyes on a playoff run that begins tonight at Jerry Simmons Stadium against the No. 24-seeded St. Martinville Tigers. The Dogs are coming off a 27-6 win over the Westlake Rams last week, but the win came with controversy. The two teams had an altercation with just under eight minutes left to play, which resulted in a fight that left players suspended. Jennings will be without the services of five players on the defensive side of the football for this week’s contest. Jennings comes into the ball game tonight sporting a 7-3 record, while the Tigers are 3-7. Despite their lopsided record, the Tigers have played a host of really good football teams throughout the season and are better than their record indicates. The Bulldogs come into the game with an offense that has continued to improve over the season, led by 1,000-yard rusher Chris Ned. Gerald Watson has also come on lately, running the football and having over 200 yards of all-purpose offense last week.

WELSH — It’s Deja vu all over again for the Welsh Greyhounds and the Lake Arthur Tigers. After playing in a District 6-2A contest just two weeks ago, the only two public schools in the district will now face off in the bi-district round of the Division IV non-select playoffs. Welsh defeated the Tigers in the first meeting, but Welsh Head Coach Ronnie Courville sees no easy match for the Greyhounds this Friday night.

ELTON — The Elton Indians might have pulled off the best placement in the playoff brackets of any school in the parish. The Indians, who will play in the Division IV non-select bracket, ended up being seeded number 11 for the playoffs, ahead of both Welsh and Lake Arthur in Jeff Davis Parish. That means the 7-3 Indians will host the first-round contest, as they will face off against the 6-4 LaSalle Tigers.

The Jennings Bulldogs picked up their seventh win of the season on Friday night against the Westlake Rams by a final score of 27-6. However, the game got ugly in the fourth quarter and led to the contest being called off with just under eight minutes left to go. An altercation between numerous Jennings and Westlake players spilled over into the end zone, which caused the referees to stop the contest after ejecting several players.

WELSH — The Notre DamePioneersscoredwith their first three possessions Thursday night, and that was enough to propel them to a 34-20 win over the Welsh Greyhounds in the regular season finale in District 6-2A action. The Pioneers finish with an 8-2 overall record and a 3-1 district mark, while the Greyhounds will enter the state playoffs with a 4-6 overall mark and a 1-3 district record.

Indians get home game in playoffs

The Jennings Bulldogs are coming off a great district win over the St. Louis Saints, in which they had to come from behind to win i n the final stanza. The Dogs trailed the Saints 24-14 in the third frame but reeled off 20 unanswered points late in the game to secure their sixth victory of the season. Jennings is currently 6-3 overall and sits at No. 9 in the LHSAA’s latest Division II non-select power ratings. Jennings Head Coach Bret Fuselier talked about the win over St. Louis a week ago and said he was proud of the way his team fought.
