What a great night for this senior class. Even the drizzly weather and threat of lightning could not put a damper on the festivities. The players, cheerleaders, band and Jazzers, met their parents at midfield as they were gifted with balloons and other assorted treats. I always love seeing those proud faces. And what a night it was as the Bulldogs blew out the St. Louis Saints 64 to 28.

WELSH - Back in the early days of radio, Abbot and Costello put together a little comedic parody on baseball. The premise was that,”who was on first, what was on second base and I don’t know was on third.” That very funny skit is the first thing that comes to mind when considering who will be the opponent for the Welsh Greyhounds this week.

Although offense sells tickets and attracts fan attention, most of the time defensive play is the most vital part of a championship football team. After replacing some key roles on the defensive side of the football in 2020, the “Maroon Wall” has continued to gel from game-to-game as the season progresses. Jennings relied on stellar play from their front seven, led by defensive linemen Keenan Landry, Jayden Sonnier, Cassidi Smith and Isley Mouton. The trio of linebackers consisting of Kolby Estes, Gavin Hanks and Ethan Jardell has been extremely instrumental in defending the run, against the pass and especially in pressuring opposing quarterbacks. With the huge Bulldog front chewing up multiple blockers, these fast and physical linebackers have been able to roam freely from sideline-to-sideline.

CROWLEY - The Welsh Greyhounds found the going rough in their District 6-2A opener, as they dropped a 41-7 decision to the unbeaten Notre Dame Pioneers. Welsh falls to 0-3 with the loss and 0-1 in league play.

The Jennings Bulldogs moved to 4-0 last Friday night with a district 4-3A opening, 64-28 win over the St. Louis Saints at Jerry Simmons Stadium. The Dogs have had another scheduling change this week, as Iowa was forced to cancel their contest with Jennings due to Covid-19 quarantine. Jennings was able to find the Leesville Wampus Cats with an open week, after their date with DeRidder was cancelled this week. The two teams were scheduled for the season opener, but were forced to change things because of the late start. Jennings now has been able to reschedule both their lost contests, with Eunice and Leesville both reappearing on their schedule. Jennings and Leesville are extremely familiar to each other, as the two teams squared off in the 2019 opener, and recently scrimmaged each other before the start of the season. The Wampus Cats are currently 2-2 on the season, with wins over 5A Pineville (42-14) and Elysian Fields, Tx. (55-38). Leesville dropped their week one contest to Neville (29-7) and week four game to Tioga (33-20).

The Welsh Greyhounds dropped their district 6-2A opener Friday night to the Notre Dame Pios by a final of 41-7. Check Wednesday’s edition of Jennings Daily News for a full recap.

For the fourth week in a row, the No.1-ranked Jennings Bulldogs spotted their opponents a twotouchdown lead in the first quarter.

The 3-0 Jennings Bulldogs open the 2020 District 4-3A slate this week when they welcome in the St. Louis Saints from Lake Charles at Jerry Simmons Stadium. The Saints enter Friday night’s contest with an overall mark of 1-1, with a 10-7 win over Kinder in week one under their belt. Last Thursday, the Saints lost a shootout with the Church Point Bears by a final of 37-27. The Saints led that game 27-16 in the fourth quarter, however the Bears rallied to score 21 unanswered points to take the non-district clash.
