The Jennings Bulldogs pulled off a little revenge here at Danny Reed Field over the weekend as they avenged an early season loss to the Crowley Gents by defeating them 9-7 here. The host Bulldogs spotted the Gents a 7-4 lead through the first three innings but responded with a five-run fifth frame to ultimately claim the victory. Jennings needed only six hits to win the contest, but senior Maddox Hebert continued to swing a hot bat by going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a long dinger to left field. Addison Finley came out of the bullpen to pitch a dazzling performance in relief of starter Carson Watson. Watson was roughed up a bit by allowing six runs on only one hit but walked five in an inning and a third. Finley came into the contest in the second with one out and tossed 5.2 masterful innings in relief. He allowed only one run, and it was unearned. Crowley managed just five hits off of Finley and he struck out six in earning the win on the mound. The Dogs will be back in action today as they kick off district play with a home game against the LCCP Trailblazers.

Indians win first baseball game in school history

SULPHUR — The Jennings Bulldogs hit the road this week to battle the Hamilton Christian Warriors in a non-district baseball tilt. The Dogs muscled out nine hits and only allowed a pair of runs in a 9-2 thumping of the Warriors. The win moves the Dogs out to 9-7 overall, and they were back in action on Friday night when they took on the Crowley Gents for a second time this season. Jennings took advantage of seven Hamilton Christian errors in the contest and rode a dominant pitching performance from Tyler Guidry. Guidry hurled a complete game by tossing all seven innings and only allowed the two runs on five hits. He also struck out three and allowed four free passes. Maddox Hebert led the charge at the plate for the Dogs by collecting three hits in four trips, while Jude Monic and Ryan Reed also collected two hits apiece.

GRAND LAKE — The Jennings Lady Dogs traveled to play the Grand Lake Lady Hornets in softball this week. The game was to be played in Jennings, but Grand Lake had some transportation issues, so the game was moved to Grand Lake. Jennings would take a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning. Grand Lake would score four runs in the fifth, tie the game at 5 in the sixth, and then score a run in the seventh to take a 6-5 win.

LAKE CHARLES — Since 1964, John Juneau Gymnasium hasn’t seen a boy’s state championship banner go up in the rafters after many near misses. That all changed Friday night when the Cardinals took down two-time state champion Avoyelles Public Charter in a showdown of No. 1 and No. 2 at Burton Coliseum in front of a packed house. The Cards shook off some first quarter jitters and ran away from the Vikings in the second half to claim their state crown by a final of 77-61. The Cardinals had not played in a state championship game since 1976 and hadn’t won one since 1964 when they defeated Athens in the Class C final. Lacassine placed four players in double figures in the win, led by the game’s Most Valuable Player in Kane Broussard. Broussard finished with a team-high 23 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Lacassine Head Coach Micah Rasberry gave plenty of praise following the game, and said it is an honor to bring one back to the small town of Lacassine.

The Jennings Lady Dogs softball team hosted the Class 2A DeQuincy Lady Tigers Wednesday night at Tom Precht Field. Jennings took a 4-1 lead after two innings, but DeQuincy would rally to make it 4-3 in the 5th inning. The Lady Dogs would get a couple of great defensive plays in the outfield and get the 4-3 non-district win over DeQuincy.
