With basketball season in full swing, parish fans had plenty of chances to catch a game this week, with many battles played on the hardwoods. Boys and girls teams from each school in the district challenged opponents both away and on their own home courts.
BATON ROUGE — One point separated the teams going into the fourth quarter Monday night in the PMAC, but No. 5 LSU (19-0, 4-0 SEC) outlasted Vanderbilt (14-3, 1-3 SEC), 83-77, to remain undefeated headed into its bye.
CROWLEY — Two Jennings High School powerlifters managed to score best overall in their respective divisions during this weekend’s Louisiana High School Powerlifting Crowley High School Raw Invitational. Many members of the Jennings High School powerlifters placed in the top three in various categories.Powerlifting teams are relatively new to the parish high school sports roster, with their popularity growing increasingly each year. This is the first year JHS’s team has competed.
Lacassine drops Vinton in Hackberry Tournament
OBERLIN — The Lake Arthur Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak on Thursday night by trampling the Oberlin Tigers by a final of 77-22 on the campus of Oberlin High School. The win moves the Tigers out to 7-7 overall on the season and they currently sit at No. 11 in the latest Division IV non-select power ratings. The Tigers placed nine in the scoring column in Thursday night’s win, including three in double figures. Kaden Guidry led the charge for the Tigers by popping in 16 points, while La’Nell Shankle chipped in 11 and Marlon Williams sank 10 points. The Tigers were back in action on Friday when they travelled to Elton to face the Indians and then return home on Monday to square off with the Hathaway Hornets in another parish match-up.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Kailyn Gilbert hit a late-game shot with 0.9 second remaining and No. 6 LSU (18-0, 3-0 SEC) walked away victorious over Tennessee (13-2, 1-2 SEC) Thursday night in Thompson-Boling Arena, 89-87, marking the Tigers’ third consecutive win in Knoxville, becoming just the second program ever to win three straight visiting the Lady Vols.
After a big win over the Welsh Greyhounds on Monday night, the Jennings Bulldogs bounced back again on Tuesday and picked up another victory over the Lafayette Christian Knights (LCA) at Gaudet Gymnasium. The Dogs toppled the Knights by a final of 65-56 to move to 9-7 on the season. The Dogs used another big night from senior guard Jeremy Legros to lead the way for the Bulldogs. After smoking the nets for 31 against Welsh, Legros came back with a 25-point performance against LCA. The Dogs also placed two more players in double figures, with Humphrey Ned going for 13 and Chris Ned hitting 11. The Dogs are back in action tonight when they hit the road to Hathaway to battle the Hornets in a parish showdown.
WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds picked up their fourth win of the season here Tuesday night by toppling the East Beauregard Trojans by a final of 62-50 from Greyhound Gym. The win moves the Hounds out to 4-7 overall on the season. Welsh placed four players in double figures in the ball game, with Sawyer Guinn, Jonavon Begnaud, Jordan Strong and Sean Dugas all going into the double-digit scoring column. Guinn led the way with his 15 points, while Begnaud and Strong both recorded 14. Dugas popped in 11 in the Hounds win.
