Heritage of resistance: Reenactment to honor slave rebellion

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Against the modern backdrop of oil refineries, strip malls and gated communities, hundreds of reenactors will gather Friday in southeastern Louisiana to remember a time when slavery flourished as a blight on America and some enslaved people fought back.

They plan to reenact the largest slave rebellion in American history.

Dressed in period costumes and holding machetes or rifles they will march 26 miles (42 kilometers) over two days from the sugar plantation country along the Mississippi River to the New Orleans suburbs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House investigators Tuesday asked President Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff to appear before the impeachment inquiry , reaching to the highest levels of the White House as they prepare to release more transcripts from the closed-door proceedings.

Investigators say Mick Mulvaney’s news conference last month amounted to “nothing less than a televised confession” of Trump’s efforts to have Ukraine investigate Democrats and Joe Biden as the White House was blocking military funding for the Eastern European ally.

ABC says interview with Epstein accuser wasn’t ready to air

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC News faced questions Tuesday about whether it was reluctant to air a sensitive story about alleged sexual misconduct after a leaked video emerged of its reporter complaining about how her bosses handled an interview with a Jeffrey Epstein accuser.

Nine US citizens killed in drug cartel ambush

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Drug cartel gunmen ambushed three SUVs along a dirt road, slaughtering at least six children and three women — all of them U.S. citizens living in northern Mexico — in a grisly attack that left one vehicle a burned-out, bullet-riddled hulk, authorities said Tuesday.

The dead included 8-month-old twins. Eight children were found alive after escaping from the vehicles and hiding in the brush, but at least five had bullet wounds or other injuries and were taken to Phoenix for treatment.

‘Goodness and humor’ celebrated as ‘Sesame Street’ turns 50

NEW YORK (AP) — Fifty years ago, beloved entertainer Carol Burnett appeared on the very first broadcast of a quirky TV program that featured a bunch of furry puppets.

Blink and you might miss it, but Burnett followed a cartoon about a witch called Wanda, which was loaded with words beginning with the letter w.

“Wow, Wanda the Witch is weird,” Burnett commented. And then — poof — she was gone.

Hounds to battle Knights in season finale

WELSH – For the second time this year, the Welsh Greyhounds will take on the number one team in the state in Class 2-A football.

Several weeks ago, the Hounds did battle with Notre Dame when they were first in the state. A loss to Lafayette Christian (LCA) knocked the Pioneers out of first place and elevated the Knights to first place in the state. Both of those select schools currently reside in District 6-2A. This week the opponent of the Greyhounds is the Knights.

Streaking Saints intent on keeping momentum off bye week

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Saints are playing so well, they were not thrilled with having a week off, even though it occurred at what normally is the perfect time.

Coming off a bye halfway through the season, New Orleans will take a six-game winning streak into its home matchup with Atlanta on Sunday. The most recent two were dominant — a 36-25 win at Chicago in which the Bears scored two touchdowns in the final 2:31, followed by a 31-9 victory at home against Arizona.
