The annual Louisiana 4-H State Food Challenge was held on March 13 at the State Evacuation Center in Alexandria. The event is for 4-H youth in grades four through 12. The competition challenges teams to create a dish using only a key ingredient and access to a “grocery store” of other ingredients. From the ingredients, team members are challenged to create a healthy dish while practicing proper food safety, food preparation and communication skills. Following the dish preparation, teams then present to a panel of judges who further test their culinary and nutrition knowledge with a question-and-answer segment. This encourages youth to develop and demonstrate cooking skills, decision- making skills, stress management, critical thinking and public speaking skills and use sound nutritional knowledge when planning meals. Jeff Davis 4-H sent its first-ever team to the competition. The team placed second in the heat, which qualified them for the final round, where they placed sixth out of 17 teams from around the state. Representing Jeff Davis 4-H were Evie Chaumont, Levi Humble, Hattie Landry and Todd Anthony Landry from the Blazers Homeschool. The youth were accompanied by 4-H adult volunteer leaders Mallory Chaumont, Angel Humble and Amber Landry.

Leland and Claudine Dupuis and Dwayne and Carla Alcock were awarded April Garden of the Month by the Jennings Garden Club. The Dupuis’ beautiful garden is located on West Racca Road and the Alcock’s residence is on Howard Street. The Jennings Garden Club awards this honor to two families each month.
