BEIJING (AP) — The three-day torch relay for the Beijing Olympics, shortened considerably because of concerns about the coronavirus, started Wednesday with an 80-yearold former speedskater carrying the flame.
In a game that could determine who would be the district champion between the visiting St. Louis Catholic Lady Saints and the Jennings Lady Bulldogs Friday night, it was deja vu. In the first meeting 17 days ago, St. Louis defeated Jennings 60-45, and the Lady Saints would again defeat the Lady Dogs by the same score of 60-45.
The Jennings boys’ basketball team was able to hold off a late rally by the visiting St. Louis Saints to claim a 57-54 district win Friday night. The Bulldogs led 52-41 in the middle of the fourth period, but missed free throws by Jennings and some St. Louis treys made it a 57-54 game with 7 seconds to play, but the Saints missed a trey as time ran out to give the Dogs the win.
LACASSINE – The No.4-ranked Lacassine Cardinals stretched their impressive winning streak out to 15 games last week when they toppled the ESA Falcons by a final of 54-49 in a huge district 6-B showdown at John Juneau Gymnasium. The win allowed the Cards to seep ESA in league play to continue to sit atop of the district standings. The win moved the Cardinals to 26-5 overall, 6-0 in league play. ESA, the No.3-ranked squad in Division V, fell to 19-9 overall. The Cardinals built a 41-30 lead going into the fourth quarter, and fended off a late ESA rally to hold on for the 5-point win.
HATHAWAY – The No.1-ranked Hathaway Lady Hornets continued their winning ways Friday night by blasting district rival J.S. Clark by a final of 96-35 at Charles Groth Memorial Gymnasium. The win moves the Lady Hornets out to an impressive 26-4 overall mark, and they remained perfect in district 6-B play. Hathaway placed 10 players in the scoring department in Friday’s win, with four hitting double figures. Lamiyah Sanchez led the Lady Hornets with her 26-point showing, and as a team Hathaway hit 14 3-pointers in the win. Hathaway built a huge 60-16 lead at the halftime intermission, and cruised to the 61-point beat down of the Lady Bulldogs.
