After a long grueling basketball season, the LHSAA released the girls’ playoff brackets on Monday. To no surprise, all six high school teams in Jeff Davis Parish qualified for the postseason. First round games will begin play this Thursday, while second round action will be played on Monday next week.
After sweeping LCCP, last year’s district champion, and avenging losses to South Beauregard and Westlake, the Bulldogs have found themselves back in the hunt for a postseason berth. The overall record does not adequately show the competitiveness of the Bulldogs on the hardcourt, after an amazing football run to the Super Dome. The season started off slow as four of the starters on the basketball squad were still playing football at the begin ning of the season. Once the Dogs found their court legs, close losses to St Louis (64-67) and Westlake (73-79) seemed to have derailed their attempt at the LHSAA 3A State Tournament.
The Jennings High School Tennis teams took to the courts this past week for a pair of matchups against St. Louis (STL) and Catholic of New Iberia. (CHNI) After opening the season with losses to 5A Alexandria Senior High, Jennings High (JHS) Tennis Coach Jared Lavergne said he was pleased with the progress he saw, as his girls’ team beat St. Louis for the first time in years. The Lady Dogs also claimed victory over the Lady Panthers, while the young Bulldogs fought hard but fell short in both matches.
BATON ROUGE – No. 11 LSU and Indiana split a doubleheader Saturday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The Tigers posted a 7-4 victory in the first game to claim the series win, and Indiana prevailed in the second game, 7-2 to avoid the series sweep. LSU is now 2-1 on the season, while Indiana moves to 1-2.
ELTON – The No. 1 Elton Lady Indians wrapped up their regular season last night with a convincing 58-31 win over the Gueydan Honey Bears to move to 19-7 overall, 11-1 in district 4-1A. The Lady Indians tied for the district title with Merryville, and will not play a tiebreaker game.
BELL CITY - The Hathaway High School (HHS) girls’ and boys’ basketball squads took on Bell City Thursday night in a district match-up at the Bell City Gymnasium. The No. 2-ranked Hornets took down the Bruins 67-50, while the No. 2 Lady Hornets canned a 60-40 victory to claim the 7-B out right championship.

Lacassine High School Lacassine’s Blake Broussard scored a season-high 25 points on Tuesday to lift the Cardinals to a 56-50 upset win over Midland. Broussard knocked down four 3-pointers in his outstanding contest.
CROWLEY – The No. 3 Lake Arthur Lady Tigers (LA) and the No.10 Tigers went on the road and took care of business Tuesday night against Notre Dame (ND) in a pair of 6-2A battles. The Lady Tigers won the opener by a final of 61-31, while the Tigers survived a scare from the Pios and escaped with a 48-35 victory.
BATON ROUGE - The Tigers took a big blow following the 2019 season along the infield, as they lost All-American shortstop Josh Smith to the MLB Draft, third baseman Chris Reid to graduation and second baseman Brandt Broussard to graduation as well. However, the Tigers do return guys with some experience, along with a host of talented newcomers to fill some voids.
