WA S H INGTON (AP) — House members' absence during the government shutdown is creating a political dilemma for Republican Speaker Mike Johnson and is testing his leadership. The Louisiana congressman sent members home three weeks ago, and they haven’t been back in working session since. In the intervening weeks, the government has shut down. President Donald Trump threatened a mass firing of federal workers. And Democrat Adelita Grijalva won a special congressional election in Arizona but has not been sworn in. Johnson says the House already did its job, passing a bill to fund the government. Johnson blames Democrats in the Senate, which is also controlled by Republicans. Democrats want health care funds for insurance subsidies that are set to expire.

LACASSINE — A local non-profit organization which supports victims of domestic violence is hosting its largest charity event of the year to help offset the costs of running its shelter.
Artisans and crafters are being sought for the 46th annual Jennings Alive Arts and Crafts Festival scheduled for Oct. 25.
The Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury recently approved various millage rate roll-ups to the maximum level agreed to by parish voters. A public hearing to discuss the millage rollups for 16 of the 22 taxable districts received no comments by the public voicing opposition. One amendment to the roll-up schedule was made, as Fire District No. 2 opted for “no change” to last year’s tax millage rate. Jurors approved rolling forward with the following tax millages:
