Two men sentenced on felony charges
District Attorney Lauren Heinen recently announced two notable convictions from her office on charges that included felony tampering and drug possession. Wilbert Ray Lewis Jr., 38, of Jennings, and Tyrrance Dangelo Antoine, 27, of New Iberia, appeared in the 31st Judicial District Court to receive their sentences from Honorable District Judge Steve Gunnell.
Welsh officials approve budget
WELSH — Officials here approved amendments to the previous year’s finances and the financial plan for the upcoming fiscal year this week, highlighting employee raises and improvement projects. Mayor Karl Arceneaux and the Welsh Board of Aldermen met on Tuesday for a public hearing on both fiscal plans.

Government spending on seniors' benefits soon to make up majority of federal budget
— More than half of the federal budget will go toward benefits for Americans 65 years and older by 2036, and that percentage is set to only grow, a recent congressional report finds. The Joint Economic Committee’s 2026 report shows that non-interest federal spending on Social Security and Medicare payouts will climb from 45% to 52% over the next decade “Given long-term demographic forecasts, this increase does not represent a peak, but rather a step in a continued upward trajectory,” the report notes.

The Elton High School FFA recently joined local boy scouts to give retired American Flags a proper send off. The U.S. Flag Code, federal guidelines for displaying, handling and disposing of Old Glory, dictates when a flag is no longer suitable for display, it should be destroyed in a respectful manner, which include burning.
Spring showers bring forth
I’ve been growing daylilies for several years, and the richness of the blooms has been exceptionally beautiful this year. I have several varieties, some of which I’ve purchased at the annual Daylily Festival held in Abbeville’s Magdalene Square, and some that have been gifted to me by friends from Jennings and family members from Texas.

School board office security plans underway
After working to fortify parish schools, officials are creating a game plan to add safety measures to the central office. To create a safe workplace for district personnel, Superintendent John Hall announced his intentions to add safeguards to the Jeff Davis Parish School Board office in Jennings.
