EHS track headed to state
WELSH – After almost three decades at the school, the Welsh High Greyhounds acknowledged the program’s rebirth after falling out in the 1950s with a ceremony highlighting its humble beginnings.
The Lake Arthur High Tigers fought hard through the LHSAA baseball playoffs but were eliminated by the Oakdale High Warriors in regional action. Tiger starter Landen Daigle went six innings for his team, giving up three runs on eight hits, striking out three Warriors and walking one. Following the 3-0 loss to Oakdale, Lake Arthur is out of the tournament.
Congratulations to Coach Don Ahshapanek and the Elton High School girls golf team for an outstanding performance at regionals in Monroe. The team will be heading to the state competition, according to EHS Principal Amy Gobert. “Shoutout to Jocelyn Ahshapanek and Kendall Myers for their strong play and determination,” she said. “All that hard work is paying off and has created a great future for the EHS golf program. We’re proud of you and can’t wait to see you compete at the next level. Good luck at state.”
The 7–8-year-old Little League divisions tore up the baseball fields in Jennings this week. Hathaway Blue took on Deep South, while Segura Family Medicine battled it out with Port Ag.
MAURICE — With a trip to the state softball semifinals on the line, the Division II Non-Select No. 5-seeded Lady Bulldogs of Iota traveled to Maurice to battle the No. 4-seeded North Vermilion Lady Patriots in a game that was dominated by outstanding pitching and strong defense. When the final out had been recorded, the Lady Dogs emerged victorious with a 3-0 victory, sending the Iota girls to the state tournament semifinals for the first time since 2004, when the Lady Bulldogs were state runner-up.
The pitcher’s mound was on fire on the 13-14 year old boys’ baseball diamond when Jennings travelled to take on Lake Arthur.
Jennings High School golfer and senior Bryson Hargrave qualified for the upcoming regional competition. The tournament will be held on Monday, April 27 in Alexandria. He punched his ticket by battling it out with two others in a sudden death playoff hole.
District 37 Rep. Reese “Skip” Broussard had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch to kick off the Welsh Little League season. Teams gathered at Sportsman Park to celebrate opening day.
