WELSH — History was made at Greyhound Stadium Thursday night during Welsh’s 54-13 rout of the South Beauregard Knights. Junior tailback Ja’Kyr in Woodard became the first player in the history of Welsh football to rush for over 300 yards, as he finished with 302 stripes on 25 carries and four touchdowns. The Greyhounds, who moved to 2-2 with the win, were a force on the ground, as they amassed a staggering 422 yards rushing for the evening.
GUEYDAN — The Elton Indians moved to a sparkling 3-1 record Friday night when they plastered the Gueydan Bears by a final of 49-0. The Indians needed only 245 yards of total offense to get the job done, but it was never a contest as Elton sprinted out to an early lead and never looked back. The second half was played with a running clock because of Elton’s point total differential. Makelin Lemoine continued to have a breakout season, carrying the football only seven times for 141 yards and four TDs. He also had a 54-yard kickoff return in the second half that put him at 213 all-purpose yards. The Indians’ defense also stood tall all night. Limiting the Bears’ offense to just 149 stripes on the night and no scores.
The Jennings Bulldogs are coming off a 26-14 defeat of the Welsh Greyhounds that upped their overall mark to 2-1. The Dogs played a tight contest with the Hounds in Welsh last Friday night, but used some big plays behind the legs of Gerald Watson and Chris Ned. Chris Ned rambled for 203 yards on the ground with a TD, while Watson just ran for 100 with a pair of scores. The Bulldog defense stood up big against the Greyhounds and limited their potent offense to just 14 points. Senior lineman Derrick Smith had a big game for the Dogs by recording four tackles for loss and a sack in the win, while senior cornerback D.K. Sams had a pair of interceptions in the win. That gives Sams four total picks for the season. Jennings Head Coach Bret Fuselier discussed the contest and said he thought the Bulldogs left some points on the board.
LAKE ARTHUR — The Lake Arthur Tigers are the lone undefeated team in Jeff Davis Parish after picking up a pair of season-opening wins and a forfeit victory over Bolton last week. The Tigers took down Basile in their opener and also defeated DeQuincy in week two. Coming off a break due to the forfeit, the Tigers now turn their attention to the Oakdale Warriors for their week four showdown in Allen Parish. The Warriors are 0-3 overall on the season and were looking to pick up their first win of the year. Lake Arthur Head Coach Tarius Davis touched on the Tigers’ open week and what they worked on with no live game played.
WELSH — The Jennings Bulldogs and Welsh Greyhounds went at it for 48 minutes in a physical football game at Greyhound Stadium last Friday night. The Dogs’ offense overcame five turnovers, and the defense held the potent Hounds’ offense to just 14 points as Jennings claimed a 26-14 victory. Jennings’ Chris Ned churned up over 200 yards on the ground in the win, while brother Humphrey Ned had a big punt return for a TD late in the game to seal the win. Senior running back Gerald Watson also had two big TD runs in the contest for the Dogs. Jennings Head Coach Bret Fuselier discussed the win and the importance of the rivalry game.
WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds will be looking to get back on the winning trail this week when they host the Class 3-A South Beauregard Golden Knights in a non-district battle. The contest will be played on Thursday night due to a referee shortage in Southwest Louisiana.
ELTON — The Elton Indians moved to 2-1 on the young season with a thrilling 64-62 victory over the Montgomery Tigers last Friday night. The Indians led by as many as 28 points in the contest, but a huge fourth quarter for the Tigers got them back in the ball game. The Indians would stop a Montgomery try for two in the waning minutes of the ball game to secure the hard-fought victory. The Elton offense again had a huge night, combining for 629 yards of total offense. The Indians rolled up 589 yards on the ground and 40 through the air. Elton junior tailback Makelin Lemoine had another monstrous performance, rushing for 379 yards and four TDs. Lemoine is now over 950 yards through three games and has recorded 14 TDs. Calvin Thomas also had a big night for the Indians, as he rushed for 198 stripes and four scores as well. Davin Simon also connected with Jaylin Thomas on a 40-yard passing score for the Indians. Montgomery also had a big offensive night, creating 499 yards of total offense, 310 of it through the air.
ELTON — No one is probably breathing yet in E-Town. After running out to a 28-point lead against the Montgomery Tigers Friday night, the Indians had to hang on to claim a thrilling 64-62 win.
